From the trailhead, the loop begins along the Iller Creek Loop Trail, entering a mixed forest of alder and hemlock. Ignore the trail to your left leading up the mountainside, this is your return trail. For now, continue straight ahead following the boot-pounded former roadbed as it saddles up alongside Iller Creek. More boisterous during rainier seasons, it may have slowed to a trickle during the summer months. Glide along shady, nearly flat trail, sticking to the wide path and avoiding bootpaths that lead off into the trees.
