Follow this loop through a vibrant natural area where wildlife sightings are common, and wildflowers brighten the trail during the spring and summer. As you explore, wander along riversides, climb to viewpoints on rocky outcroppings and follow decommissioned logging roads through recovering burn. Here too are the Painted Rocks, a reminder of the people who roamed this land long before our boots hit the trail.

From Interstate 90 in Spokane, take Exit 280 (Exit 280A westbound) toward Maple St/Walnut St, and turning north onto Maple Street. Continue of Maple Street 4.4 miles to Francis Ave. Turn left and continue 1.1 miles, staying in the righthand lane to merge onto Indian Trail Road. Follow the road 5.5 miles (road changes to Rural Route 5 after 4.7 miles) to the Indian Painted Rocks Trailhead on the left side of the road. Privy available. View Google Directions >>
From the trailhead, begin the loop by following the Little Spokane River Trail as it leads out toward the river. A few steps down the trail, note the path leading toward a large rock and a small metal fence. These are the Painted Rocks, covered in pictographs painted by members of the Spokane Tribe more than 250 years ago. After you take a moment to consider the glyphs and symbols, had down the trail near the edge of the Little Spokane River and its vibrant marshes.
